The Coppell family, upon buying their family property in Mapua, inherited an epic, incredibly large – and sadly neglected – swimming pool. They had unsuccessfully sought a company to undertake the work to refurbish the pool back to its former glory but no-one was willing to take on such a daunting project…

Winning Pool the Year is not just about aesthetics (though of course that's one of the key considerations). Other factors that are considered include innovative pool design, usability, materials, landscaping, and cohesiveness. So let's round up this year's Pool of the Year winners – and what makes them so special.

These clients didn’t want the usual “steps everywhere” like the pre-moulded pools – and they wanted a non-standard depth for the size. Once they realised they could customise every part of their pool with Mayfair, they quickly requested design features that would make this pool ideal for every family members’ needs.

“We are now two pools down with Mayfair, we think this is our forever home but if I ever need another pool built I know where I will be going!”

This client was after a pool that was simple and blended with their gorgeous natural environs – but still had wow factor. BFinished with natural materials, the entire build sits seamlessly within dramatic rustic setting.

This pool nestles effortlessly into the existing home and garden, creating a smart and stylish yet comfortable space to enjoy time with family and friends – or to escape for a swim, sauna, spot of pilates or a soak in her spa.

Once the pinnacle of luxury, this infinity pool was taken to the next level again with a stunning mirror effect. Water overflows from all sides of the pool, thereby creating a perfectly flat surface that reflects the sky and surrounding environment like a mirror, creating a show stopping visual impact.

This gorgeous Kerikeri retreat is set off to perfection by the sparkling pool at its heart. The subdued earth tones and linen pool colour evoke a tranquil mediterranean vibe.

After doing their due diligence, this retired couple determined that none of the off the shelf pool sizes, shapes, colours or entrance steps suited their requirements or aesthetic. They wanted to design the perfect pool and spa combo that would be right for their current circumstances – and still be right in 10 years time.

These clients wanted to have their cake and eat it with a pool large enough for all their needs, but still leaving enough decking area for entertaining and lounging AND ample green space for a golf putting green. With a custom pool by Mayfair there was no need to decide between a plunge, putt or platter with friends – you can have it all!

With an already busy lifestyle, this client was keen for the relaxation and fun a pool could provide – but not so keen on the possible workload! Good thing pool technology has advanced to where ongoing maintenance is automated and simple.

This client thought they were embarking on a brand new pool build. Everything changed when they discovered a 45 year old concrete pool buried in precisely the same place! Turns out they unearthed a hidden gem in great condition, and the Mayfair team were easily able to shift tacks and renovate rather than build.

This client wanted a 20m lap pool for their personal use as well as to amplify their Air BNB offering. This pool is heated for year round fitness and pleasure – both for Air BNB guests, owners, and the local surf lifesavers.

A resort-style coastal haven on beautiful Papamoa Beach. This family retreat at the Tauranga Holiday Park needed a focus for fun and relaxation for the whole family.

With a built in bar and bar stools, a beautiful outlook and a cabana, this pool is an entertaining masterpiece.

Any size, any shape, anywhere – a Mayfair pool can be constructed even in that awkward, under-utilised corner of your property. This client wanted exactly that, a custom pool built to fit that awkward corner space between their home and boundary fence.

Though very happy with the overall design of their old pool, these clients knew that in order to enjoy it for many more decades to come, this pool needed a Mayfair refresh, with a fibreglass lining to make it shine and stand the test of time.

This pool had been replastered and repaired twice – with the finish failing both times – before the client pulled in the Mayfair team in Marlborough to fix it up once and for all.

The client brief and for a safe family pool with minimal fencing came together effortlessly for this Auckland Central pool. With a new build on a tiered, sloping section, it is a simple thing to build a Mayfair Pool partially into the hill, and partially aboveground.

A massive pool has massive visual weight and can make (or break) the landscape. So when it was found this pool was leaking with surface damage it was a no brainer to modernise the whole look, and return the entire area to its former glory.
