Inground Pools vs. Above / Semi-Aboveground Pools

What is the real difference? And what other options are there?

When considering a new pool, the first questions some homeowners face is “should I go with an inground or aboveground pool?" Surprisingly, the answer depends on far more than just appearance or budget. From custom pool design to unique installation methods like semi-aboveground construction, there’s more to this decision than meets the eye.

Let’s dive into what really sets these options apart.

A few of our recent inground pools.

What’s the difference between inground, aboveground, and semi-aboveground pools?

At a glance, the difference is straightforward:

  • Inground pools are installed into the ground,

  • aboveground pools are built on top of the ground, and

  • semi-aboveground pools are part in and part aboveground.

But as with all things, not all inground, aboveground, or semi-aboveground pools are created equal – and they aren’t necessarily a different pool type, rather they are versatile construction methods.

Aside from a kitset aboveground pool, any pool can be constructed in, above, or semi-aboveground. So a better way to understand the difference is to consider the use-cases.

  • Inground pools can be more cost and time effective to build as there is generally no engineering or concrete substructure required.

  • Aboveground and semi-aboveground pools are generally site dependant – useful for sloped or uneven land, creating integrated decks, retaining walls, or infinity edges over elevated views. A semi-aboveground installation is useful to maximise design flexibility while working with your property’s natural layout. Aboveground pools are typically more expensive and take longer to install.

  • Kitset pools (also often referred to as aboveground pools) are a different product entirely and outside of our wheelhouse so we’ll park those for now.

Not all inground, aboveground, and semi-aboveground pools are created equal

It’s important to remember that these are broad categories, and the quality of the pool depends heavily on how it’s built and with what materials.

Some key differences include:

  • Material: Concrete, fiberglass, and vinyl all have different lifespans, costs, and customization options.

  • Customization: Prefabricated drop in pools limit design flexibility, while fully custom builds (like ours) open up limitless options.

  • Construction quality: A well-built pool is a long-term investment; a poorly built one can be a costly mistake.

At Mayfair Pools & Spas, we specialise in custom pools that can be built any size, any shape, anywhere and are built to last a lifetime.

How to choose the right pool for your property

When comparing inground vs aboveground / semi-aboveground pools, consider these key factors:

  • Budget: Aboveground pools are generally more costly to build, but can be dramatic statements, adding long-term value to your property.

  • Property terrain: Sloped or challenging lots may benefit from above and semi-aboveground construction methods.

  • Access: Want to be able to step right out of your home to your pool area? Or are you looking for a secluded oasis in your back garden? Pool access will have a big role in determining construction.

  • Timeline: Drop in pools are generally faster to install, while custom inground or aboveground designs require more planning and craftsmanship.

But wait, there’s more…

Elevated pools: When the ground isn’t even part of the equation

At Mayfair Pools & Spas, we don’t just build pools on land — we engineer them into the sky.

We’ve collaborated with some of New Zealand’s best architects and designers to construct full-sized pools on balconies and luxurious cantilevered designs that float out from hillsides. We call these elevated pools because they do more than rise above the terrain, they defy it.

Perfect for:

  • Clifftop homes

  • Urban balconies

  • Architectural statements

These pools require expert structural design, but the payoff is stunning: a suspended, seemingly weightless pool experience that turns your view into a destination.

Whether you’re longing for a sleek inground pool for entertaining, think your sloping property will require a creative semi-aboveground pool design, or daydream of an iconic elevated pool that maximises your space and view, we can help you build the pool of your dreams.
